D-Wave and Nasdaq Verafin Partner to Develop Quantum Applications for Financial Crime Detection

Quantum computing developer D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: QBTS) has signed an agreement with Nasdaq Verafin—the financial crime management technology unit of Nasdaq—to evaluate the use of quantum-hybrid computing in combating financial crime. The collaboration focuses on leveraging D-Wave’s quantum annealing systems and hybrid machine learning workflows to enhance predictive modeling for anti-money laundering (AML), fraud detection, and scam prevention across banking and capital markets infrastructure.
The partnership will begin with a proof-of-concept (PoC) project designed to evaluate how quantum-hybrid algorithms analyze complex, non-linear data relationships. Nasdaq Verafin will utilize D-Wave’s quantum annealing hardware via the Leap™ quantum cloud service to examine hundreds of potential data signals simultaneously across account activity, transaction histories, and multi-entity counterparty networks. By mapping these multi-dimensional network features into combinatorial optimization and quantum machine learning (QML) models, the joint team aims to uncover hidden behavioral patterns and anomalous fraud signals that conventional classical monitoring tools may overlook.

Multi-Signal Data Ingestion Quantum-Hybrid Machine Learning
• Hundreds of data signals per transaction. • QML feature selection via Leap™ Cloud.
• Complex counterparty network mapping. • Combinatorial optimization on Annealer.
• Account activity & behavioral baselines. • Predictive modeling for AML & fraud.
If successful, the initial PoC will lay the foundation for expanding into pilot applications directly integrated into Nasdaq Verafin’s commercial anti-financial crime software suite. Nasdaq Verafin provides financial crime management solutions to more than 2,800 financial institutions representing approximately $13 trillion in collective assets.
The agreement marks another commercial deployment for D-Wave’s dual-platform strategy, following its recent network operations expansion with AT&T. Leadership from D-Wave and Nasdaq Verafin noted that applying quantum annealing to graph analysis and machine learning provides financial institutions with a practical framework for testing real-world quantum advantages ahead of fault-tolerant systems.
