IonQ Launches Automated InSAR Capability for Millimeter-Scale Earth Monitoring

IonQ has announced the commercial launch of its Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) capability, providing a fully automated solution for millimeter-precision ground deformation monitoring. Enabled by the company’s space missions and sensing line, the service offers a three-day repeat cycle, allowing for high-frequency tracking of physical changes on the Earth's surface. By utilizing a unique orbital architecture that combines mid-inclination and sun-synchronous orbits, IonQ ensures consistent acquisition geometry, which is essential for accurate three-dimensional deformation analysis and the separation of vertical and horizontal surface movements.
The new offering eliminates the manual coordination typically required for high-precision radar imaging through an automated tasking and delivery platform. This high-density data collection is designed to support critical infrastructure monitoring, urban development, and environmental resilience efforts. The system’s performance was validated in a 2025 benchmark study over Mexico City, where it successfully measured subsidence rates exceeding 70 centimeters per year using 18 acquisitions over just seven weeks—a data density that would traditionally require months to accumulate.
By integrating these sensing capabilities into its broader quantum and space-based portfolio, IonQ is positioning itself as a provider of persistent, actionable intelligence across the energy, insurance, and national security sectors. Jordan Shapiro, IonQ’s President and General Manager of Quantum Platform, noted that the shorter revisit intervals and automated workflows enable customers to monitor geological and structural shifts with a frequency and confidence previously unavailable from commercial SAR providers. This move reflects IonQ's strategic expansion into specialized sensing markets, complementing its core mission in quantum computing and networking.
