Nordic Defence Tech Hub Expands Dual-Use Deep-Tech Ecosystem in Helsinki Region

Enter Espoo and the City of Espoo have announced a major expansion of the Defence Tech Hub, the Nordics' leading dual-use deep-tech ecosystem centered in the Otaniemi innovation district of Espoo, Finland. Bringing together over 100 companies, research institutes, and defense stakeholders, the hub consolidates Finland’s capabilities across quantum computing, space/SAR satellites, autonomous platforms, and secure communications.

Co-Locating Quantum, Space, and Defense Testing
The Otaniemi innovation hub physically integrates commercial deep-tech developers with public sector defense agencies and international security accelerators:
NATO DIANA Integration: Espoo hosts the NATO Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) accelerator node and test center, managed by VTT in partnership with DEFINE (Defence Innovation Network Finland). The facility provides member companies with security-classified laboratories, specialized cleanrooms, and testing infrastructure to validate dual-use emerging technologies.
Quantum and Space Hardware Anchors: Key resident companies include IQM Quantum Computers (advancing on-premise quantum processing units and hybrid QPU-HPC integration) and ICEYE (operating synthetic aperture radar satellite constellations for real-time earth observation).
Cross-Sector Capabilities: The hub integrates specialized hardware developers spanning optical sensors (Elfys), hyperspectral imaging (Kuva Space), spatial computing/XR (Varjo), smallsat buses (ReOrbit), rugged communications (Savox), micro-grids (Tespack), and environmental sensing (Vaisala).
Strengthening European Technological Sovereignty
The expansion responds to heightened geopolitical demand across Europe for sovereign defense capabilities and resilient supply chains. By establishing shared workspace, testing facilities, and commercialization channels through Technopolis and Enter Espoo, the hub accelerates the transition of academic and private deep-tech research into deployed defense, security, and civilian applications. Supported by Espoo Mayor Kai Mykkänen and City Council Chair Jarno Limnéll, the initiative reinforces Finland's position as a primary European center for dual-use technology development.
