Yaqumo Expands Seed Extension Round with Backing from Government-Funded JIC VGI and Toyota

Japanese hardware startup Yaqumo Inc. has secured an undisclosed capital expansion within its ongoing seed extension round, adding state-backed JIC Venture Growth Investments (JIC VGI) and Toyota Invention Partners (TIP) as new institutional shareholders. Executed via the streamlined J-KISS (Keep It Simple Security) convertible equity instrument, the deal bridges Japan’s public-private financing sector with its primary industrial mobility foundation to transition neutral-atom quantum processors into commercial manufacturing loops.

Industrial and Public-Private Commercialization Pathways

Establishing scalability in neutral-atom platforms requires long-term capital and specialized manufacturing controls. By integrating JIC VGI and Toyota's strategic investment vehicle, Yaqumo aims to accelerate the transition of its hardware designs from localized laboratories into real-world industrial environments.

The new backing opens up distinct growth corridors:

  • Government-Backed Capital Infusion: The round marks JIC VGI's first financial entry into a quantum hardware startup. Managing JPY 320 billion across its primary venture growth funds, the state-backed firm aims to stabilize Yaqumo's long-term R&D lifecycle and deepen its integration with domestic public sector research institutions.

  • Automotive and Mobility Cross-Pollination: The investment is also the first quantum computing deployment for Toyota Invention Partners (TIP). Operating a JPY 100 billion evergreen capital pool, TIP plans to leverage Toyota's manufacturing processes and commercial networks to explore neutral-atom quantum applications in materials development, complex logistical routing, and smart-city grids like Toyota Woven City.

Founded in April 2025, Yaqumo focuses on developing scalable, repeatedly error-correctable quantum computers using a cold ytterbium (Yb) atom architecture. The inclusion of domestic growth funds builds upon earlier seed capital injections from international quantum specialist firms like Quantonation and Alumni Ventures, establishing an international platform that anchors Japan's quantum science sector to the broader global ecosystem.
