Coherent and Quside Demonstrate Scalable, Verifiable Quantum Entropy for Data Security
Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) and Quside have successfully demonstrated a mass-manufacturable quantum entropy source, marking a significant milestone in high-volume, hardware-based security. The collaboration combines Coherent’s 6-inch Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) manufacturing platform with Quside’s proprietary Quantum Random Number Generation (QRNG) technology. This achievement enables the production of "verifiable" quantum entropy—a critical building block for quantum-safe encryption—at the scale and cost required for mainstream consumer and industrial electronics.
Most standard random number generators rely on mathematical algorithms (pseudo-random) or classical physical noise, both of which can be vulnerable to prediction or environmental bias. Quside's technology instead measures the unpredictable phase fluctuations of a VCSEL laser to generate "true" randomness. The "verifiable" aspect is a key differentiator: the system performs real-time entropy monitoring, allowing a hardware root of trust to mathematically confirm that the randomness is originating from quantum processes before it is used to generate cryptographic keys. This ensures that even if the hardware is tampered with or experiences failure, the system can detect the loss of entropy and prevent the creation of weak, predictable keys.
The integration of quantum-grade security primitives into mass-market hardware is a prerequisite for "crypto-agility" and the transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). By moving this technology onto volume-proven 6-inch VCSEL lines—the same infrastructure used for facial recognition and datacenter optical links—Coherent and Quside are shifting quantum security from specialized niche applications into mainstream processors and secure elements. The companies plan to present a live demonstration of the technology and its accompanying development kits at Photonics West 2026 in San Francisco.
