IQM Deploys 20-Qubit Quantum Computer at Aalto University

IQM Quantum Computers delivered a 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer, named Aalto Q20, to Aalto University in Finland. The system is operational on-premises, representing the fourth quantum computer IQM has deployed within the Finnish ecosystem. This delivery follows a strategic model of providing full-stack hardware to academic and research institutions to facilitate localized control over data, intellectual property, and technical expertise.
The Aalto Q20 system is designed for advanced scientific experiments and the development of quantum engineering talent. To expand its computational utility, Aalto University is collaborating with the CSC – IT Center for Science to integrate the Q20 with the LUMI supercomputer, a EuroHPC pre-exascale resource. This hybrid integration is intended to provide quantum-accelerated high-performance computing (HPC) access to the broader European Union research community and support the objectives of the Finnish national quantum technology strategy.
The deployment addresses a projected requirement for 3,000 skilled employees within the Finnish quantum sector by providing first-hand hardware access to students and researchers. The system works in conjunction with other resources, such as the IQM Academy, to support workforce training and research activities. This technical deployment occurs as IQM prepares for a public listing via a SPAC merger, a move coinciding with Finland’s position as a leading global cluster for quantum patent applications and technology development.
