VTT and CSIRO Explore Collaboration via 'Quantum Leap' Project
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have initiated discussions to establish a strategic partnership under VTT’s new Quantum Leap project. Announced at the Quantum Australia Conference on April 30, 2026, the initiative focuses on the practical implementation of quantum computing, specifically targeting quantum software, error correction, and components designed to improve energy efficiency and scalability. The project aims to connect the Finnish and Australian ecosystems to accelerate the adoption of quantum advantage in industrial sectors.
The Quantum Leap project includes a broad consortium of Finnish organizations, including Tampere and Jyväskylä Universities, as well as industry partners such as IQM, SemiQon, Neste, Vexlum, and Quanscient. VTT contributes its advanced manufacturing facilities and a 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer, with a roadmap to reach 150 qubits in 2026 and 300 qubits in 2027. CSIRO brings complementary expertise in quantum sensing, superconducting technologies, and research translation across biotechnology and energy sectors.
The collaboration will be facilitated through research exchanges, joint workshops, and the development of technical white papers. By aligning VTT’s role in the Greater Helsinki quantum ecosystem—recently ranked as the best in the EU by ECIPE—with CSIRO’s cross-sector reach, the partnership seeks to reduce duplication in quantum engineering and fabrication. The groups intend to identify specific industrial use cases where hybrid quantum-classical systems can be deployed outside of laboratory environments.
